Not So Shitty: “Shit People Say” power play

The “Shit People Say” meme began with “Shit Girls Say” and took off around the internet with thousands of iterations, many of which were problematic and stereotypical. If we learned one thing as a society from this meme it’s that critical thinking skills should go hand in hand with tech skills.

But one trend emerged that wasn’t so shitty: women stepped up to use video as a platform and tool for commonality sharing, illustrating a desire and need for sharing grievances and finding a community online.

The result became an old school consciousness raising group for a millennial audience that was distinctly different from the now-viral men parodying stereotyped women. In classic power-play move, marginalized women were to talking back to the white, male, hetero power structure by repeatedly mocking their privilege.

I love the witty way that women are talking back to oppression through video memes but can issues of power and privilege be fully explored in a 2 minute video of one liners? And are those with the power and privilege watching? Or willing to change?

Less about commonality and more about community, these videos below took a broader approach to the meme and encouraged us to feel like we had a found our neighborhood in the vast ocean of the internet. Traces of lady-hate shit can still be found in “Shit Nobody Says”; I think it needs to be appropriated and renamed “Shit This Particular White Guy Says” but I offer it here because “some of my closest friends are white guys!”

So what do you think? Does this meme only encourage us with a “that’s so true!” retort or does  it shed light on stereotypes, calling out offenders and mocking them into submission?

  1. Actually, I find myself not tired of this meme yet at all due to the many variations there can be. Are white dudes/women who say this shit to brown/black/etc… people watching and taking note? I’m sure there is an element of preaching tot he converted but there is always an element of getting through which is one of the reason media like this is made and disseminated.

    • I hear you, Josh. I’m not too sick of it either and appreciate how niche it’s getting. It’s really powerful to see people making media that speaks to them with the hopes that it speaks to others as well. I think the meme’s essential virility means that it can be seen by those outside the converted communities & if nothing else it sparks a conversation.
