Take something complicated like a painting or an artist and reduce it down to it’s most basic elements and you’ve got an interesting dynamic. But when you start with a basic source and try to boil it down…it just doesn’t go anywhere. Reducing TV shows down to their most basic icons & images just makes their all-ready-too-simplistic formula seem ridiculous. What do you think? How many of these TV shows can you name….and do you care?!
So why does this system work for artists? I think it’s because we try to find palatable ways of presenting something that is otherwise very hard to take. The wonderful part of this dynamic is that it goes both ways: we often feel the need to complicate something who’s very beauty lay in simplicity.
